Ursotab 150 

Presentation:Each film-coated tablet of Ursotab 150 contains Ursodeoxycholic Acid BP 150 mg.Ursotab 150 is a product marketed by Beacon Pharmaceuticals PLC in Bangladesh and is usually available in blister packs.

Indications: Ursotab (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is indicated for:

• Dissolution of radiolucent (cholesterol-rich) gallstones in patients with a functioning gallbladder, where surgery is not the preferred option.  
• Treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), a chronic liver disease.  
• Management of liver disease associated with cystic fibrosis in children aged 6 to less than 18 years.
• May also be used in the management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and viral hepatitis.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Ursotab depends on the condition being treated and the patient's body weight. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, usually after meals.  

• For dissolving gallstones: The usual dosage is 8-12 mg/kg/day, given as a single dose at night or in divided doses. Treatment duration can vary, and ultrasound may be used to monitor gallstone dissolution.  
• For primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC): The usual dosage is 13-15 mg/kg/day, divided into two to four doses.
• For liver disease associated with cystic fibrosis: The dosage is determined by the physician based on weight.
• For non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and viral hepatitis: Dosage should be as directed by the physician.

Regular monitoring of liver function tests may be required during treatment.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Ursotab (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) may include:

• Diarrhoea
• Nausea  
• Vomiting
• Abdominal discomfort
• Pruritus (itching)

Less common side effects may include headache, dizziness, hair loss, and rash. If diarrhoea occurs, the dose may need to be adjusted by your doctor.

Precautions: Ursotab (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is contraindicated in patients with:

• Non-functioning gallbladder.
• Calcified gallstones (visible on X-rays).
• Acute inflammation of the gallbladder or bile ducts.
• Blockage of the bile ducts.
• Frequent episodes of biliary colic (cramp-like pain in the upper abdomen).
• Inflammatory bowel disease.

Caution should be exercised in patients with liver disease. Ursotab may interact with certain medications, including antacids containing aluminium, cholestyramine, colestipol, and oral contraceptives.A time interval of at least two hours should be maintained when taking Ursotab with aluminium-based antacids.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Ursotab should be used in pregnant women only if clearly needed. It is not known whether Ursodeoxycholic Acid passes into breast milk. Caution should be exercised when administering Ursotab to breastfeeding women, and it is best to consult a healthcare professional.

Storage:Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture.Keep out of reach of children.
