Valestra 2

Presentation: Each tablet of Valestra 2 contains 2 mg of estradiol valerate.

Indications: Valestra 2 is indicated for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for estrogen deficiency symptoms in peri- and postmenopausal women. These symptoms can include hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood changes. Valestra 2 is also used for the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at high risk of future fractures.

Dosage and Administration: Valestra 2 tablets are for oral administration and should be swallowed whole with a glass of water or milk. The tablets can be taken with or without food, but it is recommended to take them at the same time each day.

The usual starting dose is 1 mg daily. If needed, the dose may be increased to 2 mg daily. The lowest effective dose for the shortest duration should be used for the treatment of menopausal symptoms. Treatment is continuous, meaning the next pack is started immediately without a break.

In women with an intact uterus, a progestogen should be added for at least 12-14 days of each month/28-day cycle to counteract the risk of endometrial hyperplasia.

Side Effects: The following side effects have been reported more often in women using HRT compared to women not using HRT:  

• Breast cancer  
• Abnormal growth or cancer of the lining of the womb (endometrial hyperplasia or cancer)  
• Ovarian cancer  
• Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs (venous thromboembolism)  
• Heart disease
• Stroke

Other common side effects may include:

• Headache
• Breast pain, tenderness, or enlargement
• Irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting
• Abdominal cramps or bloating
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Hair loss
• Weight gain
• Fluid retention leading to swelling

Less common side effects can include changes in libido, mood disturbances, skin reactions, and changes in liver function.

Contraindications: Valestra 2 should not be used if you have any of the following conditions:

• Known, past, or suspected breast cancer  
• Known or suspected estrogen-dependent malignant tumors (e.g., endometrial cancer)  
• Undiagnosed genital bleeding  
• Untreatedendometrial hyperplasia  
• Previousidiopathic or current venous thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism)  
• Known thrombophilic disorders (e.g., protein C, protein S, or antithrombin deficiency)  
• Active or recent arterial thromboembolic disease (e.g., angina, myocardial infarction)  
• Acute liver disease or a history of liver disease as long as liver function tests have failed to return to normal  
• Porphyria  
• Known hypersensitivity to the active substanceor any of the excipients
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Precautions: Before starting Valestra 2, a thorough medical history should be taken, and a physical examination should be conducted. Regular check-ups are recommended during treatment.

Caution should be exercised in women with risk factors for thromboembolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, epilepsy, migraine, asthma, systemic lupus erythematosus, and other conditions that may be exacerbated by hormone therapy.

The need for continued treatment should be reassessed at least once a year.

Storage: Store at room temperature (15°C to 30°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
