Valex 200

Presentation:Each tablet contains 200 mg Sodium Valproate.Also available as syrup and controlled-release tablets.

Indications:Treats different types of seizures.Also used for the high mood phase of bipolar disorder and to prevent migraine headaches.May also prevent seizures after head injury and fever-related seizures in children.

Dosage & Administration: The amount you take depends on the condition, your age, and how you respond.

• Seizures:
  • Adults: Usually starts at 600 mg daily in two doses, preferably with food. Your doctor may increase it gradually up to 2.5 grams daily in divided doses. The usual long-term dose is 1-2 grams daily. 
  • Children (over 20 kg):Usually starts at 400 mg daily in divided doses and increased.The usual dose is 20-30 mg per kilogram of body weight daily, up to a maximum of 35 mg/kg daily.
  • Children (up to 20 kg):Usually starts at 20 mg per kilogram daily in divided doses. 
• Mania: Usually starts at 600 mg daily in 2-3 doses. The long-term dose is usually 1000-2000 mg daily.
• Migraine Prevention: Usually 400-600 mg daily.
• Prevention of Fever-Related Seizures: Usually 20-30 mg per kilogram daily in 3 doses.

Take with food to lessen stomach upset.Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

Side Effects: Common side effects include feeling sick, vomiting, increased hunger, stomach pain, diarrhea, shaking, feeling tired, headache, and hair loss. Less common side effects may include confusion, sadness, speech problems, and skin rash. Rare but serious side effects can include liver damage and pancreas problems.  

Precautions: Tell your doctor if you have a history of liver disease, a problem with how your body processes waste, or if you are allergic to this medicine. Use with caution if you have kidney problems or lupus. Should not be used during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary due to the risk of serious birth defects. Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Avoid drinking alcohol. May cause drowsiness or dizziness.

Storage: Keep below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
