Valex CR 500

Presentation: Each controlled-release tablet contains Sodium Valproate BP equivalent to Valproic Acid 500 mg.

Indications: Valex CR (Sodium Valproate Controlled-Release) is indicated for the treatment of generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal), absence seizures (petit mal), myoclonic seizures, and mixed seizure patterns including absence seizures. It is also used for the treatment of manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder and for the prophylaxis of migraine headaches. The controlled-release formulation is designed to provide sustained release of the active ingredient, allowing for less frequent dosing and potentially more stable blood levels.

Dosage and Administration: Dosage should be individualized and determined by a healthcare professional. Valex CR tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. They can be taken with or without food. When converting from immediate-release valproate, the total daily dose may remain the same, but the dosing frequency may change.

  • Epilepsy:
    • Adults and Children over 10 kg: The usual starting dose is 10-15 mg/kg/day, increased weekly by 5-10 mg/kg/day until seizure control is achieved or side effects limit further increase. The maximum daily dose is typically 30 mg/kg/day.
  • Mania: The initial recommended dose is 750 mg daily in divided doses. Dosage should be increased as rapidly as possible to achieve a therapeutic effect. The maximum recommended daily dose is 60 mg/kg/day.
  • Migraine Prophylaxis: The usual starting dose is 300 mg twice daily. Some patients may require up to 1000 mg daily.

Side Effects: Common adverse reactions may include nausea, vomiting, indigestion, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, transient hair loss, weight gain, tremor, and drowsiness. Less common but potentially serious side effects include hepatotoxicity, pancreatitis, and hyperammonemia.

Precautions: Valex CR is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to valproate, hepatic disease or significant hepatic dysfunction, and known urea cycle disorders. Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of hepatic dysfunction, pancreatitis, or bleeding disorders. It carries a risk of teratogenicity in pregnancy, and women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception. Regular monitoring of liver function and platelet count may be necessary. Avoid abrupt discontinuation.

Storage: Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Note: This information is a general overview. Sodium Valproate is a prescription medication and should be used under the strict guidance of a healthcare professional. Always consult your doctor for specific prescribing information and management.
