Valoate CR 200 Tablet

Presentation: Each controlled-release tablet contains Sodium Valproate BP equivalent to Valproic Acid 200 mg. 

Indications:Valoate CR is a controlled-release formulation of valproate indicated for the treatment of:

  • Epilepsy (generalized and partial seizures)  
  • Manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder
  • Prophylaxis of migraine headaches  

Dosage and Administration:Valoate CR tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. It is usually taken once or twice daily. The dosage will be determined by your doctor based on your condition and response to treatment.

  • Epilepsy: The usual starting dose for adults is 10-15 mg/kg/day, increased at weekly intervals by 5-10 mg/kg/day until seizures are controlled or side effects preclude further increase. The maximum recommended dose is 60 mg/kg/day.
  • Mania: The initial dose is usually 750 mg daily in divided doses. The dose should be increased as rapidly as possible to achieve a therapeutic effect or a desired trough plasma level. The maximum recommended dose is 60 mg/kg/day.
  • Migraine Prophylaxis: The usual starting dose is 500 mg once daily for one week, thereafter the dose may be increased to 1000 mg once daily.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea  
  • Vomiting  
  • Indigestion
  • Diarrhea  
  • Increased appetite and weight gain
  • Hair loss  
  • Tremor  
  • Drowsiness  
  • Dizziness  

Less common but potentially serious side effects can occur, including liver problems, pancreatitis, and changes in blood cell counts. It's important to discuss any unusual symptoms with your doctor.

Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with a history of liver disease. Liver function should be monitored before and during therapy.
  • May cause drowsiness; caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery.  
  • May interact with other antiepileptic drugs.  
  • Valproate can cause fetal harm if taken during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. It should not be used in women of childbearing potential unless other medications have been ineffective or are not tolerated. Effective contraception should be used by women of childbearing potential.
  • Valproate passes into breast milk. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother. 

Contraindications: Valoate CR is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Known hypersensitivity to valproate or any of the excipients.
  • Active liver disease or significant hepatic dysfunction.  
  • Known urea cycle disorders.
  • Porphyria.  

Drug Interactions: Valoate CR can interact with other medications, including:

  • Other antiepileptic drugs (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine, lamotrigine)
  • Warfarin
  • Aspirin  
  • Certain antibiotics  

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking.

Storage:Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
