Zeptol 200 Tablet
Presentation:Each tablet contains Carbamazepine BP 200 mg.
Indications:Zeptol is an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing medication used to treat:
- Certain types of seizures, including partial seizures with complex symptomatology, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and mixed seizure patterns.
- Trigeminal neuralgia (severe facial nerve pain).
- Manic episodes and maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder.
Dosage and Administration: The dosage varies depending on the condition being treated and the patient's response. It is usually administered orally in divided doses. Your doctor will determine the appropriate starting dose and maintenance dose. Some general guidelines:
- Epilepsy (Adults and Children over 12 years): The usual initial dose is 200 mg twice a day. The dose may be gradually increased until seizures are adequately controlled, usually within the range of 800 to 1200 mg per day in divided doses.
- Epilepsy (Children 6-12 years):The usual initial dose is 100 mg twice a day. The dose may be gradually increased, usually not exceeding 1000 mg per day in divided doses.
- Trigeminal Neuralgia: The usual initial dose is 100 mg twice a day. The dose may be gradually increased until pain relief is achieved, usually within the range of 400 to 800 mg per day.
- Bipolar Disorder:The usual initial dose is 200 mg twice a day. The dose may be gradually increased to a target maintenance dose, usually within the range of 400 to 1600 mg per day in divided doses.
Zeptol tablets should be swallowed whole with liquid and can be taken with or without food.
Side Effects: Very common side effects may include:
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Unsteadiness
Common side effects may include:
- Headache
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Skin rash
Less common but potentially serious side effects can occur. It is important to contact your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual or severe side effects, such as severe skin reactions, fever, sore throat, easy bruising or bleeding, or changes in vision.
Precautions:
- Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, including liver or kidney problems, heart problems, blood disorders, or glaucoma.
- Carbamazepine can cause serious skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Discontinue treatment at the first sign of a rash.
- Carbamazepine may decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Alternative methods of contraception should be used.
- Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you, as it may cause drowsiness or dizziness.
- Avoid alcohol while taking Zeptol as it can increase drowsiness and the risk of side effects.
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Contraindications: Zeptol is contraindicated in patients with:
- Known hypersensitivity to carbamazepine or structurally related compounds (e.g., tricyclic antidepressants).
- Bone marrow depression or a history of bone marrow depression.
- Hepatic porphyria.
- Concomitant use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing an MAOI.
Drug Interactions:Zeptol can interact with numerous medications. Inform your doctor about all the medicines you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements, to avoid potential drug interactions.
Storage:Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
