Zif-CI is a nutritional supplement containing a combination of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulfate. It is used to treat and prevent deficiencies of these essential nutrients, particularly during pregnancy and lactation.

Composition: Each capsule typically contains:

  • Carbonyl Iron: 50 mg (elemental iron)
  • Folic Acid (Vitamin B9): 0.50 mg (500 mcg)
  • Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate: 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg of elemental zinc)

Indications: Zif-CI is indicated for the treatment and prevention of:

  • Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia.
  • Folic acid deficiency.
  • Zinc deficiency.
  • Nutritional deficiencies, especially during pregnancy and lactation.

Dosage and Administration:

  • The usual adult dose is one capsule daily before food, or as directed by a physician.
  • In more severe cases, the doctor may recommend two capsules a day.
  • For maximum absorption, it is best taken on an empty stomach, but it can be taken with or after meals to minimize gastrointestinal irritation.
  • The capsule should be swallowed whole with water and not chewed or crushed.

Side Effects: Common side effects associated with iron supplementation may include:

  • Gastrointestinal irritation such as nausea, vomiting, anorexia, discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea.
  • Dark stools. These effects are usually mild and temporary. Carbonyl iron is formulated to reduce the possibility of gastrointestinal irritation. Rarely, allergic reactions may occur.

Precautions:

  • Inform your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, especially iron overload disorders such as hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia, or red blood cell aplasia.
  • Use with caution in patients with renal failure due to the risk of zinc accumulation.
  • If there is no response to treatment, further investigation to determine other causes of anemia may be necessary.

Drug Interactions: Zif-CI can interact with certain medications, including:

  • Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics: Iron can decrease their absorption.
  • Levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa, and penicillamine: Iron can interfere with their absorption.
  • Antiepileptic drugs (phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone): Folic acid may reduce their plasma concentrations.
  • Antacids: May decrease the absorption of carbonyl iron.

It is important to inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking.

Pregnancy & Lactation: Zif-CI is often prescribed during pregnancy and lactation to meet the increased demands for iron, folic acid, and zinc. However, it is generally advised to avoid any drugs during the first trimester of pregnancy if possible, unless there is a clear indication of deficiency.

Storage: Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
