Zodef 24 

Presentation: Zodef 24 is a tablet formulation containing Deflazacort 24 mg as the active pharmaceutical ingredient. It is usually available in blister packs.

Indications: Zodef 24, containing deflazacort, is a glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. It is indicated for the treatment of a variety of conditions, including:

• Inflammatory and allergic disorders such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and skin conditions.
• Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and inflammatory bowel disease.
• Certain types of nephrotic syndrome.
• Duchenne muscular dystrophy (in some regions).

Deflazacort is a prodrug that is rapidly metabolized to an active metabolite with corticosteroid activity. It is often preferred in some situations due to its potentially lower incidence of certain side effects compared to other systemic corticosteroids.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Zodef 24 is highly variable and depends on the specific condition being treated, its severity, and the patient's response. It is administered orally. The initial dose can range from 6 mg to 90 mg per day. Maintenance doses are usually lower and are adjusted based on clinical response.

• For inflammatory conditions, the initial dose may be between 0.5 to 1.5 mg/kg/day.
• For autoimmune diseases, higher doses may be required initially.
• For Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a typical dose is around 0.9 mg/kg/day.

The total daily dose should be taken once daily, preferably in the morning, or as directed by your physician. Gradual withdrawal is recommended following prolonged therapy to avoid adrenal insufficiency.

Side Effects: Common side effects associated with Zodef 24, similar to other corticosteroids, may include:

• Increased appetite and weight gain.
• Fluid retention and swelling.
• Elevated blood pressure.
• Mood changes, irritability, and insomnia.
• Acne and increased hair growth.
• Thinning of the skin and easy bruising.
• Impaired wound healing.
• Muscle weakness.
• Osteoporosis (with long-term use).
• Increased intraocular pressure and cataracts (with long-term use).
• Hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar levels).
• Increased susceptibility to infections.

Deflazacort may have a lower incidence of some side effects, such as weight gain and hypertension, compared to other corticosteroids, but this can vary between individuals.

Precautions: Zodef 24 is contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections and known hypersensitivity to deflazacort or any of its components. Use with caution in patients with peptic ulcer, osteoporosis, psychiatric disorders, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart failure, renal insufficiency, epilepsy, tuberculosis, ocular herpes simplex, and recent vaccinations with live or live-attenuated vaccines. Corticosteroids can mask signs of infection and may exacerbate certain conditions. Long-term use in children may affect growth.

Storage: Store Zodef 24 tablets below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date stated on the packaging.
